Has anyone replaced the restrictive Y-Pipe on the their 5.4L or 6.8L? I am wondering if it will be worth the trouble? I have a 5.4L with an K&N Gen II intake system, Airaid TB Spacer, Gibson Single Cat Back and Jetchip Power Module sitting on 35" with 3.73 gearing.
I know guys did down in the V-10 forum. Might want to look down in that forum. I know there is plenty of post about it down there or try the V-8 forum.
I have bought the y-pipe off of ebay. It did change the sound of the exhaust as for the hp and low end torque it claims i didnt see much of change in that. the gas mileage part i cant really tell because the tires i have on my truck give me 9.5-10 mpg. the local shop charged me 50$ to put it on. I have a 5.4 with 40 series muffler and k&n intake.
I changed the y-pipe on my '01 V10. Bought it on ebay. Don't have any dyno numbers to back up a performance gain, but it definitley feels like it especially when towing our 28' trailer. Can verify the mileage gain though. Picked up just over 2mpg increase. Changed the pipe myself in my buddies shop. Took just over an hour to do it.
Thanks for the help, I think I am going to get one and have it welded in. Looking for a little more rumble and hopefully a mile or two to the gallon althougt I don't know if it will happen with 315/75R16.
From what I have heard, the aftermarket Y pipes don't seem to make much of a difference. The Ford engineers did a good job with the stock units - at least with the 3V V10's

the engineers redesigned the 3v's y pipe. Because they knew that the 2v's y pipe was basically a t pipe, at least that is what it looked like haha. I have heard that they make a diff in sound if u replace the 2v y pipe with a real y pipe.
They make a difference in sound especially below 3k rpm. Stan's and the Ebay Y-pipe are both good replacements. On the 6.8l expect to have some flutter over the stock unit. When I had the Y-pipe on my 04' 6.8l I noticed a decent increase in low end, of course I have a lighter SC, I how have a set of Thorley headers so the Y-pipe was taken off. You should not have any flutter issues with the 5.4l.With 35's and 3:73s I would really consider a regear to 4:30 or 4:56 or downsize to 33's.
The new Y-pipe did change the sound. It has a throaty sound with more rumble. When you look at your original y-pipe compared to the new one you will wonder how the exhaust manages to flow in the original. The new y-pipe has a smoother flow to it compared to the "T" joint in the original. Check out the pics on ebay.
Has anyone completely eliminated a Y-pipe for like an H or X pipe? Just wondering. Seems like it would have to be some custom deal as I do not see any for say anywhere. I'd sure like to know, though...
