Steering control valve/ball stud

The power-assist steering in my '76 F250 has a bunch of slop. I was poking around underneath it the other night while a friend was rocking the steering wheel back and forth, and I noticed the slop seems to be in the ball stud at the end of the control valve (it's the Bendix type).
The control valve itself seems to be OK, it's just the ball stud and probably the bushing and seats inside that seem to be worn out.

But I'm having a hard time finding just the ball stud component end of the valve. Control valves complete with the stud are easy to come by, but I don't want to spend $200-$250 on a rebuilt valve if I don't need to.
I found a few places that have rebuild kits for the ball stud, but from what I've read, the stud housing itself might need some machine work, and the kit might be tricky to install. BUT- most rebuilders say things like that to scare people into sending theirs in for a rebuild.

Has anyone here either rebuilt theirs or found a replacement unit? Once again, it's just the ball stud that connects to the pitman arm. It's got the sheet metal clamp thingy around it, and it looks like it comes off the main valve easily enough.

Hi folks, I'm new to the site. I have the same problem with my 73 F250 that I just purchased. I'm told it's a Bendix unit as well since my truck ser# is after 80,001.
I noticed Bill that you have part# D4TZ-3A533-A listed as a repair kit.....will this work for my truck as well?
Many Thanks - Cool site!

did you have the truck running?
there is a spool valve in the control body that may be moving and showing there is slop
the ball has to be worn pretty/damaged bad to need replacement and there is some adjustment to tighten.
the end of the drag link where it attaches to the spindle is the same as a tie rod end, that is where most of the play in my steering was, of course that link is pricey too even if you can still buy that piece without the control valve attached.

You have the Bendix c/v then, DC has the ball stud kits for 50 bucks.

No, it's in-correct.
IF you have a 1973 F250 4WD, you do not have BENDIX Power Assist P/S.

The T80,001 serial number only applies to 1974 F250 4WD's.

ALL 1973's, 1974's before serial number T80,001 use GARRISON Power Assist P/S.

1974's from serial number T80,001, 1975/77's use BENDIX Power Assist P/S.

See your other thread for the correct info, and the correct part numbers.

Thanks all, it would seem I have my wires crossed somewhere. I'll check it out and let you know what I end up with. It definetly has the ball stud though which makes it a Bendix right?, and the title for the truck is has it as a 73. I'll let you know how I make out.

Check the frame VIN number, it's located on the top right frame rail about inline with the alternator. If you have the Garrison style there are two ends, 1 front and 1 rear. Here are the p/n's for them:
73-74 F250 4WD & p. steering before s/n T80,001
D3TZ-3404-D front 3 1/2" long 3/4"-16 female thread
D3TZ-3404-F rear 5 1/2" long 7/8"-18 male thread

The OP has TWO different threads on this subject.

I listed these same (draglink) part numbers and the sources who have them in his other thread.

The OP still insists he has a ball stud. I wonder if he really knows what a ball stud is.

A picture is worth a 1000 words: Illustration Section 36, Page 11 shows both the Garrison and Bendix systems.

Hey, thanks for the frame vin# location Mike - I'll check it out and let you know.
I couldn't open the above attachment for some reason so I found this to help show what I have.....(link - Ford Truck Power Steering Control Valves & Cylinders). The one on my truck is the righthand bottom of the page, a Bendix......
Also, I apologise for the two threads - as I mentioned in one of them I'm new at this forum stuff so I hope I didn't put anyone out.
Cheers
