I want to paint my factory chrome front and rear bumpers to match my truck. I also want to paint the chromed plastic grill. Do I just sandblast the before paint, or do I need to do something else. My dad can paint them as he used to be a painter, but has never painter chroe before. Thanks.
There's a painting thread, just like the SuperDuty thread. If there's a way to do it they would likely know.... Of course you generally can't paint crome, but maybe some combination of sandblasting and acid or whatever. Check with the paint-heads.
I've got the xlt sport package with the painted bumpers, and from the day I brought it home the bumper has been getting chipped. You may want to think twice about painting it. Hey, maybe you want to swap bumpers, I've been thinking about going with chrome bumpers instead. Then all you would have to do is prep and repaint mine. If you do paint them I've heard that there are flexable primers that will help to keep it from chipping from road debirs. Also, maybe consider a 3m type plastic protctant after you paint them, that's what I may do if I decide to repaint, but may just keep my eyes open for some chrome ones. Not really an answer to your question, but just my experience and though, hope it may help in some way.
The best way is to have a chrome shop strip it. Blasting the bumpers is another option. Once they are stripped, just hit them up with a good self-etching primer and from there you are good to go.

Just looked at your gallery, I see you're in FL. and wrong year. However, I think you may be fine with painting the bumper on the '04 as it has that lower plastic. On the '06, you don't and that's where it chips, down on the lower part. If this doesn't make sence, let me know and I'll grap a couple of pics for ya.
Not to rain on anyone's parade, but shipping from Fl to Cali is probably more than buying a new bumper. You'd be surprised at the demand and it might be much cheaper for BOTH of you to try to trade or sell locally. Find a good body shop or custom shop in your area and see if you can work a deal. DON"T let them snow you!!! Bumpers are used for almost every collision repair done and there are companies that take mangled bars and covers and repair them to almost like new condition.
You don't even need to sand blast it (athough that's the best way). Just sanding it will do the trick.
You can also paint plastic as long as you use "elastic" (don't know the English word but it's stuff that makes the lacquesr little flexible and makes the paint to bond better).
reefman, i am going to just prep and paint mine. thanks for the offer anyways.
Thanks to everyone else for their input. I was thinking of painting the bumpers and leaving the plastic trim grey on the bottom of the front bumper. What do ya guys think? Also, should I paint the grill too, or just leave it chrome? Do you guys have pics of trucks with painted bumpers? Thanks again.
Let's see...the grille on my 01 and 07 were chrome, wheels on my 01 and 07 were chrome, rear bumper on my 01 was chrome.
Sand/scuff and use a good self etching epoxy primer/sealer.
If you got real aggressive with the sanding, 2k high build primer, sand, another coat of epoxy and then paint and clear.
