I haven't had Flowmasters, but as for the Magnaflows, they are pretty quiet at idle and low RPMs, but they get pretty loud if you step on it. You can hear my truck for quite a ways when I'm tearing it down the highway, but when putting around my neighborhood I don't wake the neighbors.
I wasn't sure if I would like the Magnaflows after hearing some sound clips online, but I gave them a shot, taking the word of my exhaust guy, and I am very happy with them.
The Flowmasters were louder and would give a resonance at a given RPM, they were a love them or hate them sound. When I read about dyno operators finding more HP with using Magnaflows I tried then out. I found a big change in how my truck would rev, it seemed to literally uncork it. The tone is deeper and overall the truck is not quite as loud but still sounds good. The best part is the better performance. I would recommend them without hesitation.
Sad thing is i did some messing around with my exhaust on my truck at the track. With my 400 in my 79 f-250 4x4 up here in colorado using flowmasters my runs were consistant 14.32 - 14.42. with no mufflers it slowed to 15.51-14.65, with the "better flowing mufflers" it ran the same as with no mufflers at all. Less restriction isnt going to result in more 'actual' performance on every engine setup.
Sound is king, choose a muffler that has the sound you like. 2-10 extra HP isnt all that much on the street, but the extra torque may be nice.
Ohh, hey JOHN, just out of curiosity, have you ever ran your truck down a dragstrip, with an overbored 460 and that much nitrous, looks like it is a good runner?
When my 400 is done i am contemplating a 472 a friend of mine has.

The nitrous was dialed in on the dyno and the first week-end I went to the track I was turned away until I had a driveshaft safety hoop, frustrating but that's what safety tech is for. We crafted one up for the rear of the shaft and now need to finish the front one. Time ran out this year so it'll be next year before a pass. Brake upgrade is this winters project also.
Your guys track must be pretty strict, ours requires driveshaft loops at 14.00 if using slicks (non-DOT) or at 11.50 for cars equipped with street (DOT) tires.
What did it Dyno at with the nitrous, and without the nitrous?
I picked a busy Test & Tune night, lots of high HP machines trying to get some tuning in. One look at the bottles and the two-piece driveshaft and he asked me to put a hoop on. Not a bad idea anyway, at least I could use the front driveshaft to get home if things went bad.
On 33" tires: 350RWHP 465 ft.-lbs Torque
On 35" tires: 302RWHP 480 ft.-lbs Torque (Yep, 50hp penalty for bigger tires)
On 35" tires: 412RWHP 602 ft.-lbs Torque (180hp jetted plate)
Another shameless plug;

i got single chambers on my 76 with a 390 and headers, you can buy flowmaster 10 series single chambers for around 70 or you can buy goerlich single chambers off of ebay for around 30 and are built just like the flowmasters you just aren't paying for the name they are really good quality.
Those of you that have installed magnaflows, what size of muffler or what part number did you use? I am going to run headers off my 400 down to a dual exhaust so I'll need two mufflers. What diameter pipe works best (2 1/2"?)?
Thanks,
Eric
I don't know what the part number is, but I can tell you the case is 14'' long with a 2.5'' pipe and sounds great. If they will be installed on the passenger side, they will have to be set side-by-side and on a angle cant to clear the frame and driveline.
