Hutch mod help

I believe I have a 35 gal tank on my 00 F350 4x4 LB. When I drive to get fuel with the fuel light on... I start the pump, hop back into the truck to calculate my MPG and when the pump shuts off... its at 35 gallons. Is my tank larger? When I heard about this mod... I filled, let the pump shutoff... waited, and then tried to squeeze more fuel in and it really didn't take much more at all. Is that what hacking that line is all about? I understand the quieter running is because of less air in the system, but actually filling the truck has me boggled.
That would explain it. I guess I will wait longer to top it off at the pump and see what happens. Maybe the light is coming on with 3 gallons left? This truck had no performance mods when I got it, so I definietely wasn't expecting this to be done.
