Anyone know how to get a old rear-view mirror nub off the windshield?? My ford f250 has no r.v.m., just the nub, which is not the same as the new one i am putting on. Help!

Hook a tow chain to it, but be real easy when you pull it. Just kiddin. There's gotta be something at an auto parts store that can dissolve the glue holding it. Worth checking into if you haven't already.

Very carefully!

I guess I'd heat it up a little to soften the adhesive and then use a very thin putty knife to work it free.

I'd follow Dan's advice. Head the window from the outside (warmer inside) and try to heat it VERY SLOWLY if you're in a cold climate (who isn't this time of year). If it's really cold outside and you heat the window too quickly the glass will expand unevenly and crack. Heck you could even throw a solvent into the mix and use all three! Heat, solvent, putty knife

I've seen window installers grab em with pliers and twist em to get them off the old window to move it to the new one. Didn't seam to hurt the window none, could try that first just go easy. If it don't come off heat it up and try again.

And yea like Chris said don't shock the glass to suddenly with the heat, turn the defrost on high until the glass is warm to start with.
I'd heat the metal from the inside once the glass is warm, it will hold the heat better than the glass will, just let the flame from a lighter lick on it. Shouldn't take much.

from my inner 13-year-old mind: read above posts and replace "windshield" "mirror" and "glass" with dirty words. ....would make a good one of those fill-in-the blank games

You could skip the possibility of breaking the windshield, and just glue the new mount to the old one. If it ever detaches itself from the windshield, you can put the two mounts in a vise and use a small chisel to seperate them. That is what I ended up doing. Worked fine.
Good Luck
Frank

Ya i work in a glass shop and CARFULLY heat it on the outside and use a plyer and gently twist 8/10 times it works without wrecking your glass
