'86 ignition module problem

Hi. This morning I was driving to school, and pushed my engine up around 3500 rpm, cause I was angry about going to school, and all of a sudden it lost power. I pushed the clutch in and it stalled out. I stopped, planning to restart, and the engine cranked but wouldnt start. Asked the auto shop teacher and he said it was probably the ignition module. I have the TFI-IV module, and picked one up at track auto. The only problem is that I dont have a socket small enough to fit in the hole to reach the nut so i can get the old on off. Anyone know if there is a special tool for this? or do i just need to buy a smaller socket? Also, do you think this part is what caused the problem? He said it was fairly common in old for trucks, mine is an '86. Thanks for any help.

The TFI module is most likely the culprit. I replaced it twice on my 84 300.

Also check to see if the stator assembly in the distributor hasn't grenaded. That also happened to my 84.

There is a special socket available for the module but I'd just grind down a cheap nut driver. The odds are you'd probably lose the socket before you had to use it again and cheap nut drivers can be got everywhere.

If you get PO'd because you have to go to school, wait til you have to go to work everydayafterdayafterdayafterday ad nauseatum :P

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 17-Nov-01 AT 12:04 PM (EST)] The socket is a 5.5mm deepwell that is very inexpensive. There is even a small self ratcheting tool you can buy for it. It is the same for any Ford, so an alternate if you know someone that works on Fords, is to borrow one.

Ford has a negociated a settlement to a class action law suit over these modules quitting just like your did, that may allow you to get a free replacement from Ford. You Truck should have less than 100,000 miles to qualify. I would take my old module to Ford and ask for a Free replacement. Herman
