I have an occasional cloud of white smoke coming from my tail pipe, but it is very intermittent. It occours only under light acceleration when taking off from a stop sign or when crawling through heavy traffic. The white smoke cloud can be very pronounced (not a little puff). It only does it occasonally which is why I'm hessitant to take it to the dealer right now. There are no check engine lights and the truck runs fine. I checked the coolant level and it seems fine. The EGR valve was replaced by the dealer about 12,000 miles ago after it got stuck open. The truck is a 05 6.0 with 44,000 miles on it and is completely stock.
I'm thinking that it is either head gaskets, EGR cooler, or the EGR valve. I'm leaning toward the EGR valve since it only blows smoke intermittently.
My first guess would be the oil cooler passages are blocked which causes the EGR cooler to overheat and split at the seams. In that case both need replacement. You should consider adding a coolant filter to prevent this from happening.
My second guess is the turbo vanes stuck and it overboosted blowing the head gasket(s). If so, make sure they check the heads and block deck to ensure they are flat. The head gasket were updated in 2006 so you would get the improved version if they are blown out.
Either scenario would be covered by warranty so bring it in ASAP and have a Certified 6.0 Technician check it out.
Exactly the same as what mine was doing. I took it in and it turned out to be Head Gaskets, EGR valve, etc. Take it in now! It will be a 6500.00 dollar bill for FoMo Co and 100.00 bucks to you but it will be fixed. I just got my truck back this week.
Thanks for the suggestions guys. I'm going to bring it in on Mon morning. I'm going to order the coolant filter kit as well so that this doesn't happen again.
