I couldnt tell from what you said if you replaced the lifters themselves or just the pushrods . Also , You just torque the rocker arms , the hydralic lifters take care of or should take care of the valve adjustment . If you still have tappet noise then you likely have some other problems going on . If you repalced the lifters , did you prime them before installing them ?

If you have the stud/nut type of rocker arms, 1964 to at least 1980, (my book stops at '80) you do not torque the rocker stud nuts. Pump up the lifters first! Use new nuts! and adjust as follows. The order is 1-5-3-6-2-4. Start at TCD with cylinder #1 on the compression stroke. Use new nuts! Turn in the the rocker arm adjusting nut until you cannot twist the push rod with your fingers (that is, it has enough contact with the lifter and the rocker arm that the lifter is just starting to compress. Caution! The lifters MUST be fully pumped up!) Then turn the adjusting nut in 1 more full turn. This will put the lifter in the middle of it's operating range. then you turn the crank 120º and adjust cylinder #5, then another 120º and adjust #3, etc. This works every time. Then rotate the crank 360º by hand and make sure there is no valve to piston contact. The lifters must bet pumped up fully!!!!! Herman

My lifters make noise until engine warms up. The tapping comes and goes until the truck is warm. I was going to change them, but my Dad said, "Thats nothing, you get 26.5 miles per gallon. Don't make more work for yourself until you absolutely have to". So, I left it alone. The truck makes more noise when cold, but I can live with it. If she ever starts tapping when warm, I will then change the lifters. I 've also talked with other Ford owners and they said they changed lifters, and they still had tapping. They told me that they could not get rid of the tapping entirely. So, As long as the tapping is less than before, I wouldn't worry about it. Just my 2 cents.

Try quieting your lifters this way. Get a good oil filter, Motorcraft or Baldwin not Fram. When you change your oil use one less quart of oil, instead add a quart of "Marvel Mystery Oil". You can get it at walmart or just about any auto supply store. Try it, you'll like it. Herman
