Cooling system/Heating problems

I have a 2003 F150 5.4 Triton 4x4 with climate control & 120K. A few weeks back, I began to have over heating problems. the truck will heat up to operating temperature, but I may or may not get heat - depending on time of day? I can hear a whining from coolant resovior cap I assume extracting air since i will frequently have coolant **** out through the cap. there does not seem to be any consistancy. I need to turn engine off whenever it approaches maximum and reandomly the heater will kick in and operating temp returns to normal and I get heat - but not neccesarily for long. I changed the thermostat - no change. I removed the thermostat to flush out any potential air locks for 1.5 weeks. replaced new thermostat still same problem. please help....

Welcome to the forum

Sounds like you have a large air pocket in the cooling system. You need to let it run for awhile with the cap loose and let it burp out all of the air and add coolant as needed.

Any sign of rough idle or missing? Hate to say it, but 1st thing that came to mind was head gasket/cracked head. These leaks often 'fizz' combustion gases into the coolant, leading to an "air pocket" in the head(s) and/or heater core. This can overpressure the system & make "coolant **** out". Any fuel/exhaust smell in antifreeze?

club is right, you first need to find out why the antifreeze "pisses" out the cap. thats a big problem. what is your overflow tank doing? what is its level? does it have excess air inside?
