hey, im wondering what headers for a 302 will give good low-midrange torque. would a catlyictic converter obstruct exhaust flow much? what flows better for low end power, dual exhaust or single?
*EDIT*
would x/h pipes help build low end? would it be wise to put the exhaust in front of the rear tires or just out the back/side?
thanks for the help

Really all headers are the same, when it comes to long tubes or shorty's then next guy will have to answer that. A catalitic converter will somewhat obstruck your exaust flow, but it depends what state you are in to tell you if you need one or not. H pipes I dont like, because the exaust has to make the "corner" to keep the awful rap down above 2500, and an X pipe the exaust has to combine no matter what, which results in lest scavanging that you have in the H pipe. I really love the sound of my Duals in my 80 150 351M, they go out the side right in front of the tires with 24 in tips. But I'm also 15 and loud pipes turn me on!! I also dont have long drives seeing how she gets 10 mpg up or down hill. Also, if you're alot older and have a wife, i would suggest out the back if your not haveing mufflers, cats, and BIG TIPS. Just because your ears would hurt and your wife would get pissed because of the droaning. All of this comes into factor before you actually put your exaust on. Also if you have A/C, you will have your windows up and it will DRONE BAD, but if your like me no a/c nothing, and i cant really hear the drone because of the wind noice. I hope my long a** post helps you, but this is what i would do.
alright, thanks for the feedback. ghunt i got a 1981 302 (yea im unlucky seeing by brother got the 80) and i just wanted to get some performace out of it. i didnt mess with the internals yest (cam, intake etc.) but getting some ideas where i can go without the smog issue
Well don't expect headers & exhaust to make lots of power, your year engine is a low-compression turd for the most part. My brother had an '84 and it was pretty unimpressive.
What brand tips to you have Taylor? Sorry for the hijack!
To tell you the truth i have no damn clue, i'll try to find the receipt but i picked 'em up at autozone for 24 a peice. They are the BOMB! EDIT: a guy from the ark forum asked me this, i meant 24 in long, not wide, if thats what you mean, their 4 1/2 wide.
You would probably not notice a difference between most headers, long or short. Use some shorties, they will be easier to install. Have a good exhaust shop build a good flowing Y pipe and run whatever muffler and tip you want in the 2.5" range. In your case a single exhaust will be cheaper, lighter and flow well enough. Exit location is pure opinion, do watcha like.
Doesnt matter what state you live in, exhaust emissions are federal law. Either keep what you have or get a high flow cat.
Well the nice thing about longtubes is that you can buy off-the-shelf header-back dual exhaust for them for any '80-96 F-series pickup. It doesn't have a crossover pipe, but the pipes run so close together in some places it'd probably be fairly easy to add one.
I agree If you want the most torque you definetly have to go with the long tube tri-y's and a singe tube exhaust.
On a low comp. smog motor with small heads (no offense Kuskoal)?? The most he would see is probably 5 ft/lbs more on a good day. Why go through the extra work?
thanks for the feeback guys. any perticular your suggesting tri-y's? what exactly are they? im kinda new-ish to the performance thing so need a lil help every now and then.

Heres a pic of the Doug Thorley Tri-Y headers. Notice where the 2 front and 2 back pipes merge in the mid section of the header. The 2into1 merge looks like a "Y" thats where they get their name. It is a proven design to enchance low end and still provide good mid and top as well. They are better suited for heavier trucks.
