Found out that my powersteering fluid has been leaking at the fitting end closest to the long metal hose under the degause bottle next to the master cylinder.
Should I attempt to fix it myself? Or have the dealer do it? The way I see it is I dont think this fitting has ever been tampered with and do not see any reason why it would have ever been. So if it miraculously starting leaking at 60K, what does that mean? Checked my PS level, not even registering on the stick.
Older Ford trucks called for tranny fluid as power steering. Almost all old Fords leak powersteering fluid lightly, I can't recall one I've owned that doesn't.
My 7.3L truck uses the Dexron III transmission fluid - no problems. Don't know why it wouldn't work in the 6.0L trucks ....... hope someone w/ specific knowledge on the pumps in the 6.0L will comment!
I copied this old post sometime back - it may apply to you if you have to replace the pump:
Ford has gone cheap with the current power steering pumps and so if you are replacing the pump, strongly consider going to the saginaw pump. I ordered mine from AGR and here is the link http://www.agrperformance.com/informationcenter.html . I can't recal how much I paid but in the +200 magnatude. It is easy to find the pump from other suppliers but the trick is it needs a custom bracket and I only know AGR to make one but it also needs a minor adjustment which the supplier provide step by step instructions at the bottom of the web link I referred to.
I haven't any personal experience w/ this, just something that might be worth investigating.
