Fuel Tank Capacity...

i was wondering if the pariffin in the old diesel could build up enough to loose capacity in your tanks? i have an 89 f350 4x4 crewcab diesel with what im assuming is 20 gal front and a 18 rear tank (from what ive been told). how ever ONE time i have run out of gas in each tank and yet to fill them up was only about 15 for the front and 12gals for the rear filled to the top of the filler hose!( not to mention the rear is a pain to fill as it automatically shuts the fuel handle off when on anything but the lowest holding settign on then handle) so i im wondering if the pariffin build up has taken from my capacity OR maybe my tanks arent as big as what i thought...

could be that your pickup tubes have broken off in the tanks. you can pull the sending unit and add a piece of fuel line the end of the tube so that it reaches the bottom of the tank.

The rusted tube in the tanks is VERY common. As far as being difficult to fill. One of my 88's had gasser gas fillers on it. I had to open them up to get better flow. Also, my filler hoses had gotten old and soft which allowed them to crush at the bend. I still can't fill up with a high flow pump but its considerably better.

There is a 3/4" vent tube inside the filler tube.
If you take the fill neck off, you can pull the internal vent tube out and it will fill better.

There was a plastic deal on the end of the supply line in the tank.
After a while the plastic gets brittle and it breaks off which is why you can not run all the fuel out of the tank.
If you put a piece of fuel line on the supply tube to extend it to the bottom of the tank, cut a V in the end of the tube so it don't get sucked against the bottom of the tank and cut the fuel flow off.

you think it's a PITA to fill the back tank, just try taking the fill lines off/out the tank when you be dropping the rear tank to replace it. kind of like taking shoes off a kid that don't want their shoes off. LOL

I've run both tanks completely dry. Not at the same time but after i bought the truck I wanted to know if the gages were right or a little off. I filled the front at the tune of 19 gallons plus or minus and the back tank to about 17 plus or minus. By the way i pulled the front tank off and it was clean. Also the front gage registers full till the fuel is down to about 1/4 tank. Talk about a thrill,WOWWWWW!! The back tank is closer but not exact so i keep a litttle fuel in both tanks incase i get away from home and a Diesel station.

This goes for me too. I know for sure by running them empty now and then that the front squeezes in 19 and the back comes right up to 17.

I would add that you want to do this running down the road, like the interstate. Otherwise you will have a HARD time getting the truck started. In fact one of the tanks went dry coming off an exit ramp. That was a thrill, just hoping I got the tanks with the gas started with enough room to coast and restart. I did have enough room but the motor ran rough for awhile till all the air got out of the system. Also, the needle was down in the red, not above the red so I know I can run into the red, but not for long.
