I have a 1996 Ford Explorer that i just recently purchased. Unfortunately the sub keeps acting up and sounding as if it is blown or rotted. was wondering if there was an easy way to replace just the sub or if i have to disassemble that entire quarter of the paneling? Also once i do finally get this thing out of the box are there any aftermarket replacements? Thanks for any help that you can offer.
I can't picture the front of the oem enclosure in my head, but to remove the box, you have to access the back panel. It is not that bad, but not real fun either. There are all the push pins you can see, plus a screw at the bottom - (maybe two screws) - where the carpet meets it. You then remove the rear seat seatbelt bracket (cover pops off and then you ahve a torx head bolt). With that done, you can move the panel far enough around to do what you need to.
Backin linked to the JL box which is a good unit. I had one before i changed setups.
I don't know your particular needs/wants, but if you are going to do amps, etc, I would do everythign at the same time. SO much easier...
If you are just changing the sub for another one, should be around an hour or so work if you haven't done it before.
Have you checked the wiring to the sub and to the amp. Just make sure the connections are good, especially the ground. A bad ground will make the best system sound like crap.
thanks for the info. and the welcome. i am just looking to replace the sub, i took apart the back panel and the sub is definitely shot. better to buy another jbl or is there an aftermarket?
