OK so a boat load of people have me worried about this Stability Inspection in NJ. I can tell you they are very thorough in the inspection. I am curious though how people are failing so much. Thye must really be showing up with vehicles that are just plain out to dangerour and not stable enought for the road.
By the way does anyone know of someone who is looking to seel 35 or 36" inch tires. I am in need of some new tires and wouldn't mind picking up something slightly used.
Monsta NJ is a ridiculous state as everyone knows. What is done is an inspection as any other as well as going over the suspension system and steering with an eagle eye. After that your truck is weighed for total wieght. Then you have to drive up on a ramp ( drivers side) and passenger side tire lines up with a yellow line. Now your truck is weighed again to see how much weight is put to the passenger side. They compute it to see the ratio of weight distribution and see if your truck is stable per their figures and limits.
Oh yeah they check height of vehicle per gvrw. Depending on how much the truck is will depend on how high the vehicle can be. No vehicle can have bigger tires then 38's.
When I was there last (1993), they put the truck on scales to get the total weight of the vehicle. Then they make you drive up a ramp with the right side of the vehicle which is set to a specific angle (dammed if I can remember the angle) and take the vehicle weight of the left 2 wheels (the ones not on the ramp). The second weight cannot be more than a certain percentage of the first (again, cant remember the % number). Damn, I hate getting old...
Some of the tricks of te trade were to have the left side fuel tank empty with the rear tank full, as it would slightly offset the weight distribution.
Now that it's 2008, the procedure may have changed as I am sure the lift laws have.
I agree whole heartedly! What moron came up with this load of crap? Someone must have looked at an off roading magazine doing a suspension flex test and thought it would be fun to watch people do this all day or something? I mean thats just the most absurd thing ive ever heard of?
I'm not so sure about this stability testing, but motor vehicle inspections are worth their weight in gold. If you have ever seen the carnage on the highways up close and in 3D, you would agree. (I just made a rhyme!) You wouldn't believe some of the junk running up and down the highways.
Now it is the opposite. The weight is done from passenger side. I am not sure of the angle but when you start driving up it gets a little scetchy at the top. Some tricks now are to open all windows so the wind doesn't affect the weight and also have your tank either full to the tippy top or so empty it is running on fumes. The laws have definately changed since 93. Much more stingent.
