I have a 85 f150 ext 4x4, with an AOD tranny, The problem is, when im driving along its goes threw each gear fine, but when it shifts into O/D, the motor seems to work harder (bogging) and i start to loose road speed, until it shifts down to 3rd, has anyone had this sorta problem ?
unfortunately that is the way it is. the aod is just not much good in these trucks. I dont know if the truck is just to heavy or what but I have kicked my self may times for spending 2500 dollars for replacing mine in my 86 and not just getting a c-6 and putting it in.
You could try adjusting the TV cable or rod a tiny bit longer. That might delay the shift to OD enough to let the engine have enough rpm to hold it in gear. Don't get carried away with the adjustment as a little goes a long way.
The OD clutches in AODs aren't built very good. I believe the fix is a new servo piston with an o-ring on the shaft to seal off the fluid. I got mine from Sonax relatively cheap. OD works fine

Is this a new problem or has it always done it? What motor and gearing are in the truck? Tire size?
Anyways yeah im slowly getting it, when i bought the truck from a guy a while back, and he didnt now much about them, he set the timing up a 0 degrees, i advanced it to 10 degrees now, it runs a hell of alot better now. plus i found a slightly small vacum leak on the rightside inner fender, cured that and it shifts pretty fine now other than the 31" tires that throw it off a lil now.
thanks everyone for all the info and thoughts.
The internals from the improved later trannies can mostly be put into the AOD so
the strengths will be on par with the supposed newer better trannies. http://www.lincolnsonline.com/tech/00080.html and check baumann for parts and
other tips.
