I was told by a couple local guys that a grill cover will help mileage during the winter months by keeping some of the air out on the engine compartment. Is this good advise that I should consider? I am seeing a 3-4 mpg drop when it gets cold. If it is a good investment, where is a good place to find them? The only one I can find is on Cabela's website.
It won't help with mileage. Regardless of what you do, your mileage in the winter will suffer thanks to the winter blended fuel. However a 3-4 mpg drop is quite excessive. Do you idle your truck a lot in the winter?
I know I idle mine a lot in the winter so that it can get up to temp. Warmer truck = happier truck and cannot hurt mileage except getting warm. I hunt about a mile down the road. I hate to start it and drive that short a distance and shut it down. That thing looks better than anything I have found that is reasonably priced. I believe it is even better than my cardboard unit. That is something I could leave on and drive around with.
If it makes you feel any better Jason, I still love that sig. Wake up America. Time to start jailing people who hire those folks. They are not paying social security or taxes, and having babies in our country who are American citizens. Without an income, they have to go back. If you employ them, shame on you, you are a criminal. That's right, a CRIMINAL.

Curtis, doesn't higher engine temp promote efficiency? Isn't that the sales pitch for the 203* stat? I think the grill cover can only help.
In cold weather you're still going to have a working radiator, even with a grill cover on. The cover helps keep snow and ice out, and it promotes a faster warming of the engine after you crank by reducing the airflow a bit and allowing the engine to come to operating temps faster. However, the cooling system is well designed and once it gets to operating temps it won't run any hotter. If you want to run a warmer truck all the time, then you have to get a different t-stat.
I guess in a roundabout way it might help with mileage in regards to idle/warmup time, but that's about it. There's no real aerodynamic benefits.
Does that make sense? I just woke up a few minutes ago and the coffee hasn't kicked in yet.
my thought was with a grill cover you would get less air to the turbo making the motor work harder...isnt this the reason for the zoodad??? to get more air..i can understand using the cover to warm her up first thing in the am...but i think it should be opened up for driving down the road...the Inter cooler needs that cool fresh air as well to keep EGT's down..
I don't think the cover cover's the air intake portion of the grill. I think it just covers the radiator section. I am still thinking of giving it a try but I might have to modify it a little though if it does cover the wrong stuff.
A grill cover really doesnt do anything with these cooling systems, no coollant flows through the radiator while it is warming it up it only flows through once the thermostat opens. You will see a very little difference if any with a cover in place.

Sorry for the rant. Continue on folks.
It does make me feel better a little, thanks, and I agree with you 100%.

This would be the least of my worries when it is sub freezing out. My 6637 can suck all the air it wants from that gaping hole known as the bottom of the engine compartment.

Now this is an interesting post and food for thought. I think I want my truck to warm up as quickly as possible. Since the stat won't open until it reaches temp, I know the radiator has no affect. What does have an affect is that sub freezing air being sucked through the radiator making my intake air that much colder and cooling it even more through the IC. I'm kinda thinking along the AIH design theory. Oh well, even if it helped a little bit, it would be worth it to me. Besides, that cover will not close the bottom inlet where the front license bracket mounts anyway.
