6.9 ?s

Ok im planning on installing a 6.9 in my 78 f-250. Me and Dave S. have discussed wiring but theres a few more things i need to know. The parts truck thats available has a 4 sp and i want an auto. Ive heard myths about the bellhaousing being the same as a 460. Is this true? Also how close would a 6.9 come to bolting upp to the 460 engine stands? Any help is much appreciated.

Dave

No gasser tranny will bolt up to a diesel.

Not sure exactly what you need to do to mount it in a 78, but I think there is someone here that has done that.
Now if I could just remember who it was.

Well i figured that much. just my luck. So how much power can i expect out of it with a couple hundred thousand on it? If i run a 4spd, 456 gears and 33s whats this thing gonna do? Im lookin to pull the local 78 chevy with a 454 around adn still run pretty decent.

That would be me Dave LOL!

As for the IDI. You will need a Diesel C-6 tranny (easy swap over if you do it that way) You will need the gasser output shaft of a C-6 and use the governor from the Diesel.

Here is where I posted pics and what I did.

You'll be able to pull without a problem. You won't have the greatest top end though.

Looks like a nice job. I need a lil more help understanding how you made the engine mounts. I see you welded tabs to the truck frame then used pieces from teh 80s model truck? What parts did you use from the desiel truck?

I did use the 80's mount set-up. But on the passenger side: What I did was use the chunk that I cut out of the crossmember (its about 3/16" thick/ same as the frame) for the passenger side. I cleaned up the weld that was on the frame rail. I took the chunk (from the cut out cross member), and form it to the rail (by cutting and shape it to the frame). Then I welded it up to make it flat across the top of the frame rail. I had to use washers (spot welded the washers to the engine mount) to make up the gap between the frame and the mount.

The cool part is I used the nuts and bolts from the 80's truck. So if you ever need to replace the parts........ You can get them from an 80's truck!

This is getting bad, Dave, Dave and Dave plus bigblu78 who is probably also Dave.

4.56 gears with either a C 6 or T 19 behind a 6.9 will pull anything if you can get enough traction.
But 3000 RPM will be 64 MPH on 33" tires and it probably won't run 70 MPH before the governor shuts the fuel down.

Did some one call me?

I would caution against 4.56 gears with a diesel, your top speed will be very low, even 4.10s were an overkill for me.

Nope.. no Dave's here.. Just a Troy!! These guys are right though. I have C-6's with 4:11's in two of my trucks and they will pull anything but they are very disappointing at higher speeds. I run around 2600-2700 rpm at about 60mph.

Ok ive gota guilt 460 right now. Bout 400hp with a built c6. I might just stay with it and put the desiel in the crewcab for the cool factor.
