I have had two mechanics tell me two different things on this: one says that there is residue around the water pump and that it is failing and needs replacement (for $400). The other says that there is residue, but coolant will come from the weep hole when the pump is failing and that my pump is fine. I never see coolant on the ground nor is the coolant ever low. Temps are fine. I am planning a 1200 mile round trip in a few weeks. Any ideas on what this "residue" is and should I have the pump replaced as insurance against failure for the trip? 2002 F-250 7.3L 72000 miles Thank you!
There's a couple of other places where coolant typically leaks, one is around the thermostat housing and the other is the o-ring where the lower radiator hose neck bolts up. From what you have said, I believe the second mechanic.
Thanks for the quick responses. When the pump leaks from the weep hole, is it very apparent (coolant on the ground) or?? Second, what would warrant a thermostat housing or o-ring change (other than coolant running out)? Any worries here?
Here is another good information link you should bookmark. It has tons of info on all kinds of mod's and maintenance for your powerstroke. http://www.7point3.com/mods.aspx

I just bought one for my 99 at napa for 166.00 and I also ordered a new thermostat housing and 203 degree stat from dieselsite for a little less than 100.00

Just crawl under the front part of the engine after the your truck been sitting for awhile, and look at the upper part of your main crankshaft pulley. There might be some moisture (coolant) that has dripped onto it from above where your water pump weep hole is.. You really can't see the hole because the pulley is blocking the view. And yes, if the pump is leaking enough there will be coolant on the ground.

When mine let loose, I found about 2 Gal of fluid on the ground and it was pouring quite fast. I had just driven into a parking lot and my wife saw something in the front of the truck. At that time I saw a leak and also a spill line up the parking lot to the street. It was coming out from the weep hole. At that time I was a few hundred miles from home, but I did find a mechanic to replace the pump, Only a mile or so from where I was.
A few months before the pump let out, I had replaced the Thermostat and housing. I had no leaks up until the pump died.
My bearings went out on my pump and you could move the fan around before it ever leaked from the weep hole. If you do change it 203* thermostate and billet housing are a must
Ditto Country2. Typically, when the bearings are real short on life, you can grab the fan blades and move either up/down or side to side and if there is any substantial movement, you should consider replacing the pump. The job is not hard at all, just some grunt work and time/patience.
Thanks everyone. I think the pump is fine. I looked for myself from underneath and there was some kind of fluid that dried and left a white residue that looks like it ran from the pump (or around the pump). Could have been engine cleaner??? The fan blades spin, yes I checked without the engine running ;-) and there is no play or movement when I grab it and move side to side and up/down. Thanks, again you guys saved me a couple hundy plus 4 hours (at least for now).
