Hey guys, long time no talk, hope everyone's Rangers are still a'tickin'.
Well...with a new engine and new transmission comes the need for new (reliable) forms of instrumentation. I'm looking to blow a couple of questions out of the water before I begin the installation.
I've got all the parts in my possession or in the process of being delivered, so I've got a couple of questions.
A) The new speedometer is an Autometer mechanical 3 3/8" model. The footnotes, courtesy the Autometer website:
"Includes 5/8" - 18 threaded cable input with .104" square drive. Speedometer cable not included."
I've no idea the size of the OEM cable, so my first question is will a new OEM cable function correctly (i.e. be the right size) with the Autometer speedometer? If not, where can I get a 5/8" - 18 threaded cable with .104" square drive for the Ranger?
B) I'm yanking the dash out obviously, going to either trash the stock gauge faceplate or use it as a mount for these gauges. But what's behind it, what can I remove, how much space is back there, etc.?
EDIT: and C) I've heard about 31025 different values for the fuel level sending unit on a '94 Ranger, anyone know for a fact which one it is. I'm in Oklahoma and my wonderful shop manual is in Texas.
Thanks for any help, hope to hear from you guys soon.
5.0L and T-5 have already been for a while. I've been running mechanical oil pressure/water temperature, but got sick of the gauges being in an awkward location (base of the center dash, below the ashtray), and my speedometer is becoming grossly inaccurate at high speeds (running down the highway at 70 mph it will drop to 65 or so, then bounce up around 75, sometimes pegging at 95 or so, then drop down and move all around), so I figured I'd consolidate it all and make the truck look nicer.
I knew you were talking about doing a 5.0 swap a while back, I didn't know you did it. I was gone for a while. Anyhow, I don't know jack about gauges, I get mine installed and the speedo has never been an issue. However, good luck with it and enjoy.
