Ok this may have been covered already. I have searched to no avail. While letting down my drivers side window there seems to be a scraping type sound. I have looked down into the door, but I can not see anything that it might be. Also, I have noticed a slight tear on my window tint. Any suggestions. 2004 F150 Supercrew 4X4.
Sounds like the window regulator is just about to go. These parts have been a problem because they used cheap plastic. Others have reported a subtle grinding noise for a couple of uses and then BAM, the window drops into the door like a rock. If you have the skills, you can purchase the regulator from Autozone or Advance (I hear they just became available this month) and pull off the inner door trim to access the inside of the door and replace the window regulator. If you have to take it in, be prepared for a fairly expensive fix.
I think DMAC66 is right, this is not just a Ford thing many of the automakers use extremely cheap parts in the window area. I think they know most people will not do this job on there own. The parts will be very cheap to replace but the labor will be high. I have heard of some window motor though going for as much as $500-$600.
If you are under warranty still or like me bought an extended warranty it will cover the cost. I had my replaced under my extended warranty and it only cost me the $100 deductable.
Your window regulator is definitely about to go out. Same thing happened to me. You might have a day ... or three months. It's hard to say. I'd recommend you buy the window regulator unit now so that you can a) replace it yourself, or b) have someone else do the labor. The dealerships will really stick you on the price of the part if you wait and have them handle all of it. Trust me!
I recently had to change out my right rear window regulator. It went down, but wouldn't go up. After removing it found the cable had snapped and wound itself around the pulley so bad. I went and purchased one from the dealership for $130. It came with the new regulator and pwr window motor. It wasn't expensive at all. I changed it myself and it didn't take me long at all. I found the instructions online, how to remove the regulator. The only thing I didn't do was remove the glass. I just propped it up with a board and the regulator came out so easy.
It's good that you (MikeK321) were able to handle the installation yourself -- saved some $. But you paid 2x the price of the part by giving your money to the dealership. For some of us, an extra $60+/- is no big deal. But others may need to nickel and dime it a bit more. Personally, I'm always for saving money ... helps build up that bank account for other things. That, and it's part of my job ... it's part of what I do for my employer. For future reference, you'll ALWAYS get a better price buying from authorized online store web sites than from the super high margin making stealerships.
Past that, next time I have one go out, I'm calling you to come fix it. I'm not that lazy, but darn close. Actually, I just tend to justify having others fix certain things. I work (hard) to afford to pay others to do the things I don't want to do ... like change my oil.
