Clutch HELP

I've got a 59 F250. I'm leaking clutch fliud into the cab. It seems to be coming from the hole where the clutch goes through the firewall. Is there anything I need to tighten or replace? HELP!

Sounds like the clutch master cylinder (mounted on the firewall) has a leaky seal. The fix involves removing the master, and either rebuilding or replacing it. You would be advised to replace the slave cylinder (mounted on the bellhousing) at the same time. Then you need to bleed the air from the system.

be careful...some of them use an internal slave. the throwout bearing mounts on it. the trans has to come out to change it.
and some yet come preinstalled, with fluid. you dont have a choice but to change both.
and it is recommended to change both.

i know someone will come on here and correct me. i have no idea as to what years im referring..just know that ive changed them both ways.

A 59 will have a mechanical clutch if original, not hydraulic. A 95 will be hydraulic.

Some more information from the original poster would be helpful.

Sorry guys- The 1959 F-100 has a hydraulic clutch, firewall mounted master with external slave mounted on the bellhousing. I think 1956 was the last year for the mechanical linkage. He would probably be best off by just purchasing reman master and slave, bleeding the system and calling it a day.

Did they re-introduce mechanical clutches at some point? Because I know Ford switched from mechanical to hydraulic in about 1983.

I suppose so then. I know my '56 is mechanical with a bellcrank and rod. I know the 57 to at least 1960 was hydraulic. We know the 80's and newer trucks use hydraulic, so I guess sometime during the 1960's and 1970's they may have gone to a a cable or rods. I think it seems odd too....
