OK, I have been a lurker reading while I shopped for my truck. I bought a 05' Lariat screw 4X4 loaded with just about every option you can get...leather, full power, moon roof, all but the heated seats.
I absolutly love this truck, except...
I doesnt sound like a truck. I mean it is just soooo quiet, no muscle sound.
It is stock and I am looking at Edge Evolution for programmer, what about exhaust to give it a more muscle sound without loosing all my MPG.
also whats the difference between the air filter and the CAI? are these the same thing? been looking at K&N as that is what was recomended to me... but reading on here others recomend Volant. I'll pick one of the two so really my question is whats the difference between Air Filter and CAI?
Thanks for all the input I know you all will give me!
The air filter is just a replacement filter that goes in the factory housing. A cold air intake is a replacement for the factory setup from the throttlebody on out. It comes with a new intake tube and all. It is suppose to give you more/better airflow and cooler air. Many people use and like them. I had one on my 03 but have just been to cheap right now for the new truck.
Use only dry element air filters. DO NOT use K&N on your FORD truck.
Do not use FIPK on your truck it is NOT a true cool - not even cold air system. It takes hot air in from the engine compartment - NOT good.
Volant - Outlaw power - have a closer to cool air system.
AEM also has filters that are oil-less for Ford trucks.
Motocraft paper filters actually provide the optimal performance for our trucks.
Drop in a dry filter to your stock box and save some money.
Air going thru the stock box is cool enough. Since it spends very little time in there anyway.
I agree that for a stock truck you are better off saving money and not bothering with a CAI.
Everyone will tell you something different about the exhaust and what they prefer. I would just find a truck that you like the sound coming from and ask what he has. To be honest would would likely be happy with any of the mufflers that they will recomend. I would go to a local exhaust shop and talk to them about getting a replacement muffler and keep your pipes. You will get very minimal, if any, gains from changing to a full catback system. Save the $$ on that too.
It sounds like you have made a good choice on the programmer.
Just my .02 on the matter.

FIPK??? Granted I am a noob to performance in the F150, and am no mechanic by any strech of the imagination so grant me a little latitude...what the heck is FIPK?
I also wanted a new sound for mine just something that sounded like a truck, but after thinking about all the different brands and sounds and power gains(took me some time)finaly decided to leave it stock, after hunting and being able to sneek over hills and see deer in the fields that I hunt in,helps me scout a little.Just something to think about HuntnFordMan!! But yea when it warms back up I will want it again.but mine does have around 50,000 miles and its getting a little louder on its own?

Fuel Injection Performance Kit. It consists of K&N cone type filter and a different intake tube all the way into the intake manifold. It is supposed to allow better air flow into the motor. You remove that huge plastic filter housing under the hood and replace it with this. Check out K&N's website if you want more info.
Sorry about that HuntnFordMan,
I assumed that you had some K&N info already, my bad.
The kit is a waste of 300.00, again DO NOT use a wet filter element.
My info was merely to replace the stock filter with a K&N filter, I have only from reading these forums learned of the CAI, I did go to the K&N Site, and looked at some of the CAI's on some parts websites. I sure dont understand how by removing the stock air intake and putting a pipe with a filter on the end will give more cold air??? seems to me the only one that might give more cold air than stock is the volant, the rest look like they would suck more hot air from the engine compartment.
I think I will stay with the stock assembly and just get a decent filter that has decent filtration and flow, add the edge evolution since I do alot of towing, and take the truck to the local muffler shop for some simple changes to the exhaust.
You know, it's funny how things work.
I will have to agree that the fipk by itself is a waste. I am seriously considering going back to the stock box on mine. What I mean by the "funny how things work" comment is that when I bought this thing a year or so ago everyone here told me what a great thing it was and all that. Not that I am mad at anyone here but this post is advising not to use it and also not to use that type of "wet" filter. What gives here?
I see the truth in it not being a cold air filter. Heck even the stock box draws from outside the fender. What is the big risk with the oiled cone filter?
I drove my truck to work today for an oil change, should I go ahead and swap back to the stock box while it's here? I really don't plan on any other performance mods except maybe an exhaust but honestly that's simply one of those things I want but will most likely never buy.
Oil will foul the MAF sensor and it is a problem for the computer.
NOT worth it. I had a K&N filter in my Bronco, now I have to clean my MAF to get the truck to run right.
It happens more than it should and improper reoiling also causes such problems.
K&N is excellent for carbbed engines, our electronic engines are very sensitive as you already know.
See if AEM has your filter, or stick to Motorcraft filters, and modify your exhaust system.
you just oiled your filter too much...a properly oiled filter will have 0 effect on the MAF and other sensors...people just don't know when to stop...about the only vehicle that absolutely shouldn't use an oiled filter is the Camaro...thier MAF is so sensitive it ain't funny.
if your MAF does get an oil film, then take about 5 minutes and use a cotton swab with denatured alcohol...good to go
Edge programmer for fun
Volant CAI for throttle response and a little performance addition
Magnaflow Catback SIDO #16614 for some performance and the classic V-8 rumble
here are some vids of my truck with the Volant and Magnaflow installed. My truck makes people's heads turn when I get on the gas and it just sounds amazing. The Volant CAI actually made my throttle response alot snappier. the oem air tube caused a throttle lag that is now pretty much gone.
