Hey yall, I'm new to this site and was wondering what to do. I just did a frame off restoration on a 78 F-150 custom shortbox 4*4, it has a 351m and a c6 tranny should i rebuild it or find something else, it only had 29000 kms on it. Any input would be greatly appreciated.
rebuild is real easy. Im in the middle of the same one you are doing. Lots of guys will get you into a dick waving contest and talk about the 400 instead of the 351M. Basically its a different crankshaft and rods and costs between 250-500$. My feeling is that the 351M has excellent power and torque and if you build the 400 the increases might put too much strain on your other parts like heads, tranny, driveshafts, axles, etc and those could get expensive to replace. There are nice ways to get more HP/torque from your truck like a lightweight aluminum Edelbrock intake, better carb, or getting rid of the flex fan and shroud and putting in an electric fan(my personal favorite). The flex fan/fan clutch robs the truck of lots of power cuz it runs all thetime.
