I have an original one on my 56, check out my gallery! I think? it's in the right place? If this suites you, I'll measure from the back of the hood and tell you.
Jake08,
Welcome to FTE! Here's some info on the mounting location that I measured on a '54 hood that had an ornament:
Measuring along the body line on the center of the hood, starting at the back (near the windshield), the first hole is at 33 3/4" and the second is at 37 3/4". I'm not saying that this is the "definitive" location, just one sample. I think these were dealer installed, so the location might vary slightly.
Bigwin has an OEM NOS one with the installation instructions that was used as the prototype for the SS repro. He should be around any moment, it's his favorite topic.
My nos one says to place in desired location. I purchased another one last weekend and I removed it off the truck! I measured from the front hood orniment and the first hole id 14 1/2" from the emblem. The bird only uses the middle and rear bolt holes.
Make sure Danny the blacksmith gets those dimensions for his customers. His repros are the nicest around. I think the ornaments for these trucks are wild. How many ornaments were put on 48-60 ford trucks? Must be hundreds!! I have 1 truck with the bird and it has 2 stars on the crown of the hood. I also have airplane and a bulldog from a Mack truck........anyone have weird ornaments on their hoods? Bill
The chrome swans with colored plastic wings were very popular, it was advertised that the wind off the wings would divert insects from hitting the windshield. I think that claim was about as believable as the "supersonic deer whistles". The Nash nudes were also very popular with the younger guys.
I heard every Texas truck have to have a set of bull horns mounted on the front before they would be issued plates!?!

I put a 1948/51 Packard hood ornament (Cormorant) on my 1965 F100 when it was new. Going down the Santa Ana freeway once, a ladder came off a construction truck, the ladder hit the Packard's wings, which deflected it over the top. The force broke the wings off the bird, but they were replaceable.

Good Luck!
Mine is pretty darn close to this measurement, and I'm satisfied with where it is on mine. I finally got time to check it and I'd say it's within an 1/8" of his measurement. Take pictures!!!!
