Question about rocker arms

I'm trying put back together and get an 1984 300I6 back on the road that has been sitting for about 5 years. I keep having a problem with the rocker arm nuts, after I adjust them and let the truck run for a while the rockers start to click, then after pulling the valve cover some of the nuts have loosened. Anyone have this problem? Any suggestions on how to keep them tight?

Question about rocker arms

Check your shop manual about what to do...you need to adjust the postion of the cam (by hand turning the crank) so that when you torque the nuts down the correct amount of tension is placed on each individual rocker. If your just poppin' the cover and tightening away some are getting to much and others too little. If I remember correctly the torque depends on the size of the studs in your head.

Question about rocker arms

If they are the stud type rockers, 1: You need new nuts everytime you take them off. They are self locking and the feature is good for one go. 2: Stud type rockers are not torqued. They are adjusted with the cam at TDC for each cylinder. One cylinder at a time, 120º at a time. With the lifters pumped up, tighten until you cannot turn the pushrod easily with your fingers, then tighten one more complete turn. That will preload the lifters correctly. Herman

Question about rocker arms

I believe that the torque should be between 40-45 lbs.
I am not completely sure though.

Question about rocker arms

Thanks for the help guys. I will put the new nuts on here soon, they are stud mount, I got the 20 because I was used to working with the pedistal mounts found on the newer small blocks.

Question about rocker arms

Actually, you should try this first. I learned it from one of my old instructors at college in the auto lab When puting back together an engine with quite a few miles on it and you need to adjust the lifters (NOTE: this is ONLY for hydraulic lifters!!!) you merely need to tighten up the nuts to where the engine is running 'close'. Then (while running w/the valve cover off) back off on the nut until you just barely hear the lifter start to "click". Then tighten down the nut 1/4 turn and you are done. Simple except for the part where you have to control the oil. It tends to squirt all over the place. Easy remedy is to get an old valve cover and drill out holes where the nuts are to adjust. The rest of the cover keeps in the oil. Hope this helps...
