Hello all....I have a 97 f350 and I went to work one day and the truck ran fine...I went to go home and the truck will only shift from first to second gear...nothing else it was a long ride home without 3rd and OD
ok...I had to change my batteries the other day so if I had a light blinking I guess it would have stoped. I checked the tranny fluid it was a little low but not more then a quart. how long would it have to run to get the light to come back on if it was blinking. I drove the truck a bit this weekend and it shifts 1rst to 2nd good but nothing else. I pulled the plug on the rear and cleaned it but I don't know what else to do
I am not really informed on tranny shifts. Do you have a programmer in your truck? A chip? Just a thought but go back to stock and see what happens if you do. Chances are it wont help, but you never know. Other than that, I would say find a tranny shop, sounds like you broke bands. Again though, I am no expert, and dont have an EDUCATED guess here. This is more like a dumb guess......

Since there is no band involved with making the 2-3 shift, I doubt that a broken band is the problem.
You probably have a bad shift solenoid, or a stuck shift valve, or a bad direct clutch. Any one of those is going to take a pro to fix it.
if you changed a battery check the fuseable links on the passenger side fender next to the battery, when mine blew on my '90 it cost me a $2000.00 overhaul.
I had the same symptoms you described.
