My 5.4 2000 EB (160k miles) doesn't seem to want to get up to temp, or so says the temp gauge in the temp gauge in my dash. It was giving me a "service engine soon" light so I took it to AutoZone and had them pull the code. I forget what the # of the code was, but the description was that the engine was consistently running too cold.
The said that it was more than likely low of the water temp gauge, or the thermostat. I will say this, my heater doesn't seem to be getting as hot as it used to so maybe the water temp is lopwer than normal.
Is there any way to check the coolant temp sensor?
Do thermostats fail vary often? If it is the thermostat, how easy is it to chamge?
I'd replace the thermostat as it sounds like yours is stuck open thus not allowing the engine to get up to a normal operating temperature. Stats are very easy to change just remove the upper radiator hose at the water neck, remove the bolts and lift up. Pull out old t-stat and install new along with new gasket (o-ring).
