Front Main Seal leak?

Truck is a 2001 7.3l diesel of course.

Well I found oil all over the front of the truck... on the front axle. tracbar, ect.. I cleaned it all and ran the motor and it appears to be leaking from behind the harmonic balancer (crank pulley). and dripping down to the lower radiator hose.

Is there any other place that oil could come down above the pulley and drain around it?

How hard is the main seals on these to change? Any write ups?

I appreciate all opinions... thanx

There is a seal behing (may be in it) the stock balancer that could have gone bad. You should be able to get them from Intl for less than $20 IIRC. You will have to pull the balancer to do it though, which will require a puller. FWIW, if I were in there I'd put a new oil pump in. Once the balancer is off, it's only 4 bolts holding it in there. ITP diesel sells a melling pump, I think they're about $80.

Ron you beat me to it. I had exactly the same thing and a nice shiny new grey CPS was the cure.
Less than $30.00.

Ah.. so a CPS will make it look like a bad front main? I know our CPS needs to be replaced.. It will intermitently give us issues. I'll try that first.. I can't say I'm praying for a cheap fix cause the cps and main seal are pretty much the same price, but the cps would be easier to change.

Nice.. 25 bux is good..

I looked at our local parts chain website and they still list it for 149.. I'll go to the dealer for this one.

Do the CPS leak bad enough to have enough oil drip down and then get sprayed everywhere by the fan while it's running?

Truck only has 120k on it.. I'd hate to have to worry about main seals going out.

The more I think about it.. I remember seeing oil up there by the CPS (but had forgotten that's where it was)

Saw oil all on the timing mark as well.. I didn't really notice until I saw the whole diff and track bar were covered in oil. spots like it had been blown all over the place by the fan..

Wish I was home now to take a better look at it..

Well looked again last night.. Saw oil from behind the crankshaft pulley but couldn't see if it came from up top

I do see oil on the electrical wires that plug into the CPS and on the timing mark indicator.. I'm wondering if it is the cps for sure and dripping down..

Unfortunetly I have to wait to sell a few things.. money got tight and the rear pads are shot.. ended up toasting one of the rotors in the rear.

Has anyone considered that this leak might be diesel fuel?

The drain valve's "extension" tube ends right about where he is describing a leak.
