Last year I had problems in my '06 PSD in cold weather. When cold (below 25 degrees) it would start then die right away, it sometimes took 2-3 attempts before engine would run at startup. So I changed oil to synthetic and had inductive heat flash on the same day. Problem was resolved.........Until..............Saturday AM temp was 15 degrees and the problems returned, I had changed oil using Motorcraft 15-40. Should I simply switch back to syntyhetic for cold weather or do I have hidden problems?
15w40 oil is way to thick for these temps, you should use 10w30 dino or 5w40 synthetic. Did you change the oil this fall to 15w40? Dealer should be changing you to 10w30 or atleast asking.
My plan was to use dino 15-40 in the summer and syn. 5-40 in winter. I usually have it done at my mechanics. However, since I wanted dealer to change fuel filters (throw some business his way, let him keep records of service done in case of warranty issues) I let them change the oil too. Service writer (not diesel tech) said since Ford says 15-40 in our area that I should use the 15-40. I guess I'll have the oil changed AGAIN this week to synthetic.
I guess some trucks may react differently to oils. I've started my truck up using 15w-40 Delo in 14 degrees no problems. Even before my inductive heat strategy installation.
You don't need to have the dealer service your truck in order to log it. I have my truck registered here and enter whatever I do into the log. I still have some things to add(like all the rotate/balance/alignment checks) but all the dealer servine is in there too....
This may be a dumb question but are you using any anti-gel additive? Could it be fuel- related?
Im wondering the same, possibly some fuel gelling up in the lines or something..... Ive never heard of injectors causing the truck to start and then die right away when cold. Never trust your fuel, always run an additive!
I'm experencing the same problems here in Minnesota. I have also noticed that when starting out cold the truck will not shift into 2nd gear until almost 4,000 rpm's.
**UPDATE* the change back to synthetic 5w-40 oil once again resolved the problem. Turned out to be a rather expensive waste of dealers oil when I only put 500 miles on it.
