Im having trouble with my 6.9,After i shut it off today to change the oil i couldnt get it to start,I checked for fuel it was getting it to the filter,Then i checked at the injectors i loosened the nut on the line and cranked it and no fuel,Then i checked for power on the wires that go to the what i think is the injector pump it mounts on top of the engine and has all the lines going to it,Had power in the one that is bolted down but no power in the one that pushes on,Next i tapped lightly on the pump and ran power to the wire that pushes on and it started,Im not sure if the tapping did it or the power to the wire did it,What are the two wires on top of the injector pump for???Then i drove the truck for several miles came home shut it off,After sitting for awhile it doesnt start again,This all seem to start after i ran out of fuel,Then i put 6 gallons of off road fuel in the tank,I then drove to a fuel stop and put a can of sea foam fuel injector cleaner in the tank and filled it up with regular diesel fuel. And since then i have trouble getting it to start,Did the off road fuel hurt something or did the injector cleaner do this,Once i get it running it runs great,It even seems to have more power with this fuel in it,What do you think could be wrong???
What year is the 6.9 if over 86 use the block heater for 2 hours to help with starting..
On the injection pump the thing with all the 8 lines.... there are 3 wire connectors. Looking from the front of the truck.... the front left is fast idle solenoid with a brass plunger, the rear right is timing advance and the front right is the fuel shutoff solenoid (these 2 should have different sized connectors). All 3 should have power on a cold engine (key on), on a hot engine (key on) only the FSS will have power. The FSS can be tested by running a 12v jumper direct to the electrical connector on the IP.... there should be an audible click when power is applied/removed. The click means the FSS is operating, however the internal metering valve (Fuel supplier) is spring loaded and may not be working if it is stuck internally. Your tapping the IP if that is what you hit may have dislodged a stuck metering valve.
A HD product like sea foam can clean things too well at times.......
How fast is the starter cranking the engine...... can you count RPMs...that is too slow.
The starter RPM should be 200 minimum....... now we still do not know if the Glow Plugs are working on the start either do we.
The truck is a 1985 but the engine is a 1983,I checked the sticker on the valve cover and it says 1983 model year on it.Im not sure if this is correct or not since this truck has had several owners.I installed all new motorcraft glow plugs saturday afternoon, and they have power going to them i checked with a test light.Since my last post the truck starts up every time i try it so maybe you are rite and it had something caught in the metering valve,The tank was removed and clean when i got it,a new starter has been put on and it cranks very fast,Well i hope it fixed itself im going to see what happens in the a.m.thanks very much for your reply.Craig
I'll second the fuel shut-off solenoid. I had them go bad completely or occasionally hang up which explains why it started after tapping on it. Like PLC7.3 had said, putting power to it you should hear it draw in. FYI these solenoids are replaceable from Int. Harv. or Napa.
