no passing gear

I have a 96 F150, 4x4, 302, E40D, The truck drives fine unless you get on it and grab the passing gear, then it builds RPM but doesnt speed up, like a slipping clutch in a manual trans, what is wrong with my truck???

Check your trans fluid, if it smells burnt you've probably burned up a band or whatever. Should be red.

Have you pulled codes? Could be the TPS. Mine would not downshift when my TPS was acting up. 93 F-150 5.8/E4OD

In a 1996 the VSS and ABS sensor are one in the same. It is located on the top of the rear diff and removes with a 1/2" nut.

Disregard what the guy at autozone told you...

Ok, So I replaced the speed sensor and that did not fix it, no other codes came up, I guess I need to bite the bullet and take it to a tranny shop? Any other thoughts of something I over looked
