cab corners
floor boards
Front metal on firewall (big hole)
doors
cab mounts
and lots more replacement metal.
I've heard it's tough to weld these and not get rust in a year or so. This true? Is it possible to find a good cab at a good price so I don't have to weld all this? I'm also new when it comes to welding.
Location? Getting a good used cab will cost about $800 or so, including shipping. This is about the cheapest you are going to get a cab shipped to you. Price out body patch panels, and figure up a dollar price per hour that your time is worth to you.
I've got a supercab that needs cab corners to the door jamb, drip rail rust-out that caused the cab corner rust, and wrinkles all over that big ol' roof. I've found a decent cab that needs less work than mine, and will be working on it over the winter. Come spring, a new front end on the truck will debut. I figure the work will be a little less on the replacement cab(who knows), and I can still use the rig until cab swap time
id replace it. if your new to welding and bodywork, it's going to be killer tackling a job that big. my original cab was in similar shape. found a whole truck on ebay and had it shipped to me by one of the sellers buddys. got a whole truck for 500$ in pieces.
look around at the junk yards. I picked up a cab that was in great shape for $200 without doors. I was in your shoes with my old cab. believe me shop around for a used cab you'll find one.
Well do some research compare both in price and see if your new to welding it could be some good experience trying to repair it but thats if your willing to take the time to do it cause its time consuming
In my opinion, just replace the cab. You will be dollars and TIME ahead. 79? Seems that anything from about 78 to 83 or so should be the same. Check the junkyards and the classifieds in the Penny Saver, Greensheet, or whatever is in your neck of the woods. If you see old trucks in the field, ask if they are for sale.
It isn't a very good feeling spending the most of a winter welding up parts, only to have to replace it anyway.
Thanks for the replies. This is truck #2 as my first shortbed had a bad frame but the bed and other parts were in good shape. Guess I'll keep going through trucks until I find all the parts I need.
Search for a new cab. . .I tried to revive mine which was in better condition yours (which doesn't say much, lol) and I just finished cutting the whole thing up for scrap.
What you see on the surface, isn't nearly as bad as what you will find in seems and layered areas of sheet metal. Thats the main reason I tossed mine, the main seams were cancered out and so was the ENTIRE rear cab support. . .
Mike truck salvage a sponsor or ebay are about the best bet!
Yep, I recommend replacement! (Says the guy with the cab and bed business)
Seriously, I've done it both ways and like putting a whole cab on best.
What type of cab do you have? I have a few 76 - 79 regular cabs to pick from. I have no 73 - 79 Crewcabs at this time. I have one 1979 Supercab. Email or call anytime. I can picture what I have for you and maybe you can come on down when it gets extra cold up there and take a break with us down here in the warm sun and pick out a cab in person!
If you go with epay be careful. Lots of regions think they are rust free but are not. Even my state of South Carolina has it's hazardous spots up in the mountain tip tops and down on the ocean low country. Tennessee has it's salty areas even though they are "down south", Texas has the gulf coast, North Carolina is not South Carolina and sees a heck of a lot more winter weather, you just have to be carefull on epay. I have made a study of the different areas of the country for solid truck parts. If you are looking on ebay and ever wonder if their location os a good one, just email me and I'll let you know what I have found for their area.
