I have a set of 592 020 hastings rings and they are giving me nearly a half inch of end gap. Yes 0.5 in. My haynes manual states that max end gap is 0.020 what the heck! Ive been waiting forever to get time in the shop and now am stalled. Help!
Wrong rings, or are you looking at them in the cylinder or in your hand? Sitting in your hand they will show about 1/2 inch end gap.
Push the ring down in the cylinder about an inch with out pistons and make sure they are saquare in the cylinder, then check the end gap. I put the ring in the cylinder then use the top of piston to push the ring in and use the ring land on the piston to square the ring.
Was the engine re bored??? Is this a rebuild??? Looks like you will have to mike the bore and see just what it is, possibly the engine was re bored at one time. Are you using new pistons and what size are they--you didn't provide enough information. Could also be a case of the wrong rings.
An old rule of thumb, 3 to 4 thousand end gap per inch of cylinder diameter. Four inch bore times .004 = .016 end gap If the piston says .020 on the crown and it fits with the proper clearance I would guess you got the wrong set of rings. Most likely packaged wrong.
