I have a BIG problem

Last night this happened while I was driving down the highway.

So I had it towed to my house and this morning I started taking it apart. Somehow the two nuts that hold everything on the shaft got loose, and basically destroyed everything. The only good parts are in this next pic.

And here would be a pic of all the cracked, stripped, or melted parts.

I need some help figuring out where to buy all these parts. My splines inside the hub are striped, so should I go to a junk yard and buy a whole assembly? The truck is a 1981 f250 4x4 dana 50?? with manual hubs. If anyone has a hub assembly please let me know if you want to sell it. Thank you for any help

edit- the threads on the spindle are also toast. But the splines on the axel shaft are ok

Cheapest way would be to find used stuff and get everything at 1 shot.Hey they have to take apart may as well get everything and replace what have to. But most places will not separate axle assemblies.

The bearings races , nuts washer can be had at auto parts. Hey the might get u spindle. But my price book is old and you dont want to know price for new one. Can always check eBay some sellers on there have whole yards to draw parts from . Or The classifieds here.

That sucks, ebay has a ton of Dana parts. Just do a search under Dana 60, or Dana 50, many parts are the same in Danas so make sure you do a bunch of searches using the Dana word, you will find what you need.

So far I cant find an entire hub assembly, and the only used hub on ebay was at 60 bucks with a couple days left. If I go to a junk yard tomorrow what should I expect to pay??

What is wrong with the hub on the left? You should be able to knock the bearing races out and put new ones in.

What is wrong with the spindle on the right? Are the threads messed up that the large nuts thread onto? If they are not too bad, you can take it to a machine shop and have them run a thread file over them to dress them up.

That piece right in front of the rusty hub on the left, is part of the lock-out hub, and you don't need to worry about it. You will get a new one when you go buy new hubs for about $60.00 pair. You will also eliminate a lot of the stuff in the "this is all I can save" picture. New hubs will come with all those pieces (save the snap ring though)including the chrome part with the button.

In the picture above, you do need that little splined ring sitting in front of, and between the hub and the spindle. But it looks like it's ok from the picture.

The reason this happened is the nuts were not installed correctly. Here's a little picture of how they should go.

Did you have any noise at all before this happened? About 1200 miles ago i replaced my brakes and rotors, and I had never had a 4wd hub apart and i just took it slow and got it done. I do not remember doing exactly what was said in Franklin'd diagram, and I have like a "clicking" or a "popping" noise when I brake or turn (usually at low speeds). I am just wondering if you heard any noises before this happened so i can get an idea if i need to look at my truck again. Thanks, Jesse

I don't know what caused it but by looking at your pics unless you cleaned every thing real good looks like everything looks dry and cooked (no grease) I would also take apart your other side and give it a good look.

Man I hate it when my front wheels fall off handles like crap!

the splines inside the hub are trashed. The "locking part" I would call it cant slide inside the hub because half of the splines are stripped, etc. Then the spindle cant be repaired, over half of the threads are "smushed together. It looks like I will have over a couple hundread in it if I try to buy everything new. anybody have any ideas?

When I pulled out of my driveway I heard a little screech. I slowed down to see if I could here it again and never did. Then when I got on the highway all kinds of stuff started to happen. There was clunks, loud screeching, the truck was pulling increadably hard to the left, etc. But it all happened all at once, and I pulled over as quickly as possible.

If you have a setup like this(some of the later trucks had a large locking nut that clicks), and can't remember if you locked in in correctly, I would not debate about it. I would go out right away and check to make sure it's in there right. You should be able to tighten that outside locknut very tight, without affecting the bearing play at all. The book says the outer locknut should be tightened to 150 ft lbs.

I did a search on www.car-part.com in Illinois, looked for hub for a 81 f250, and this place came up.
