Hey, new to diesel and am looking for an IDI duelly to purchase - might go see one today that is reported to be in pretty good shape with 160k miles on it - BUT - it blows blue smoke while running. Can someone tell me what that is most likely caused by? The truck is at a public auction tonight and if it looks decent and seems to run okay I may bid as high as $4000. Any thoughts on that?
Was it blue when it was running warm or cold? Starting it from dead cold will tell the the health of the engine the best. But just guessing, if it is blowing blue when its running it has most likely been beat and isn't worth 4 grand. Usually, if it puffs on start, it is the valve guides and/or seals, if it is all the time, probably the rings or both.
The CDR is usually not serviced on most trucks, it should be serviced every other oil change.
A non functional CDR puts engine oil into the intake which shows up as blue smoke.
For an IDI to be trashed in 160,000 miles means it was never serviced at all.
