Does anybody know what is involved with swapping a 78 Dana 44 into an 82 F150? I checked out The Bronco Graveyard, and I don't have an extra $1800 laying around. And from what I've seen, the only kit you can buy from that site you have to lift your truck at least 6". I also seen there is an article on this site, but its about a 95 F150. I understand there has to be some modifications to the steering components. But I don't know which ones. Can anybody help?
What I actually had in mind was to swap everything from my 78 into my 82. Engine, tranny, transfer, and front/rear axles. They're both shortbeds and they're both automatics.
The major difference is that the TTB trucks have a larger crossmember that the TTB bolts to. It gets in the way of a straight axle. You can notch it and get away with 4 inch lift but 6 inch is normally needed to get the pumpkin to clear it.
Ther isn't much difference at all from 80- 96 suspension and frame wise. The article about the 95 will be accurate for your 82.
Why don't you just pull the cab and bed off of the truck and swap them. I know someone who put the body off of an 84 onto an old 76. It will take a little bit of work, but it would be alot easier than swapping everything else over to the newer truck.
The solid axle rad arms bracket have a factory hole that line up with bolt hole on newer truck frame and helps line up. They just cut out motor crossmember and make custom one around here. If only 4 " lift the officials don't look to hard .
There was a post of a guy that did one , he used steering compontents from about every suv and truck Ford made to hook up steering . And It look stock !
Check out that forum.. Can answer any question you have.. The broncos and ford f150 front ends are the same and you can use the same advise/setup on either.
