What are the common problems with Excursions? The reason I ask is becasue I am trying to buy one and I have found 3 in New England. One is a 2000 with 55,000 original miles. Drives very nicely and is immaculate, but the dealer wants a heafty premium for it (25k)
I have found a 2002 Excursion with 92k on the clock for 22k. I don't think I need to be worried about the engine, but what are other common problems? Should I be afraid to buy a high mileage example?
Really need some more info on the trucks. I wouldn't be afraid of a high mileage Ex., just have an Oasis run and possibly a Car Fax. That said, for $3000 difference I would buy the 2000.

I look at this truck as a long term investment. The diesels are good for many hundreds of miles. Lets say that the 2000 was a Mass vehicle and has a fair amount of rust on the frame from the salt/snow, etc
Hi Jbilliel, I just bought an '04 diesel w/98K on it. I paid 25K for it. It is a limited and loaded with all the toys. I like my new EX!
I found an ad in Pittsburghs craigslist, craigslist website and select Pittsburgh, PA search for excursion. It is an 02 for 15 grand with 55k on the odometer. I personally think you can do much better in if you travel a little ways for it.
Actually, try google searching "ford+excursion+craigslist" and you will get many results across the country of ads on craigslist. This way you can at least compare with what you are looking at. Hope this helps you decide.
- ball joints
- brake pulsation (some call it warpage...but the I believe agreed to cause is pad material 'transfer' to the rotors causing rough surface)
- 4x4 vacuum hubs can be problematic
- Door lock actuators (sp?)
- 4R100 transmission diode recall
- PSD can have the CPS (cam position sensor) issue
- V10 has spark plug torque and exhaust manifold studs that should be checked
- Both Ex's have weak rear factory spring packs that can cause havoc when towing
That's about all I can think of from a 'common' problem standpoint...I'm sure others know more 'common' things to look out for...
I would definitely keep searching. I bet you could save a few grand if you consider a roadtrip or plane ticket to another state or further away from any big cities. I live in chicago and have traveled to Ohio and Colorado now for vehicles and saved a few thousand in doing so each time.

$25,000 is way too much for a 2000 model with a diesel. You should easily be able to get a 2002 or 2003 low mileage with diesel for $25,000.
The Ford dealer in my city has a 2003 6.0 diesel with 49,000 miles right now. I am willing to bet you can get it for $25,000 or less. I talked this same dealer down $7,000 off their asking price when I bought mine. (You will have to remove a lot of cheap chrome add-ons, the previous owner must have been a chrome nut.)

I agree... I think it is a New England thing. I have only been able to find 3 in all of New England in 7.3L with decent mileage and they all want a million dollars for them.
Agreed. Your best bet is to buy out of state, and just plan on a nice drive home. You'll get a newer Excursion for much less money. How far would this dealership I mentioned be from you?

It's starting to look more and more like that... The problem I have is how are people getting these vehicles home legally? Connecticut requires a bill of sale and a title before I can get a plate. So how do I only make one trip down?
