'81F100 w/300-6(everything stock) I recently got a new timing light with the 'advance' feature. The total advance on my engine shows to be 20°. I can't find any spec on what the total advance should be and since 20° seems low, I'm asking if anyone knows? Timing is set to sticker...6°. Thanks!
I found the factory sticker to be somewhat WRONG. I have an '82 that would make pre-ignition noises when cruising down the highway at 65mph when the timing was set at 6. I set it at 10-12 and have never had another noise like that. It also seems more responsive and pulls hills better. I think the 6 degrees was a ploy by Ford to lower emissions or something.
When I looked through Chilton's it has the 6 degrees listed for most of the 300's in '81, but '82's are listed at 10-12. I went by the book and not the underhood sticker, even though the book has been wrong before. I'd try to go with the more retarded timing, just to see what happens. It won't hurt the truck, may change your gas mileage
The total advance timing was never an issue on these trucks. If it does make you worry I'd check your vacuum. Leaks will cause the total advance to drop.
