cold weather boost

This is my first diesel (F350 CC 4x4). When I first got my truck this summer, the boost was about 10 psi between 65-70 mph. I have noticed that when it is colder (40F and under), for the first 30 to 45 minutes, my boost is between 15 to 20 psi. After that, it gets back down to the 10 to 12 psi range. Is this normal for the 6.4L? Also, even under mild acceleration it is very difficult to keep the boost under 10 psi when cold.

I agree with those numbers. I was also going to post about this. Must be normal. I was used to lower boost on my 2005 6.0. 2008 F350 4x4 3.73 Lariat CC SRW

I noticed the same thing on my 08. The truck is also very sluggish feeling for the first 10-15 minutes of run time in the morning, so I just take it easy till it warms up.

the higher boost is caused by the resistance of the cold oil's and grease in the drivetrain/wheels. engine has to work harder to move the cold truck.

I believe that would be the exhaust back pressure valve causing that, if the 6.4s still have them, that is.

I don't know what it is, but the engine seems to be working alot harder during that time. Even if it was cold, should it take that long (30-40 min) for the engine to reach efficient operating temperature?

my 7.3s, 6.0 and 6.4 are and were up to temp in a couple of miles at30 to 60 mph., and i had heat within half a milewhat is the roblem. these things are trucks, nuthing more and you are getting al **** ablut them. the diesel engine is an engine,,fuel it up, change the oil,[prefferably synthetic]and drive the darned thngs.

The air is more dense when it is cold, thus creating more boost. My blown foxbody mustang even gets more boost when it's cold.
