I have a 2001 Ford Explorer Sport 4WD with 144k miles. I bought it used at the time it had 121k miles. So far it been a good truck. Everything works except the rear wiper. Sometimes the transmission changes gears sluggish. My question is should I keep it or get something else? I am undecided on which way to go
Diesel2008-
I own a 2001 Explorer Sport. It has 98K miles. At 93K miles I had to have trans work done. This was after many months of noticing the sluggish shift. I bought a used trans w/36K miles and had it put in, it was doing same thing in different gear! Finally deceided to put in new Ford Valve Body. That did the trick.
However, BE VERY CAREFUL to get your original FORD box that it was delivered in for the return or Ford will not honor the $200 core charge. I found out the hard way. It was a nightmare and I wish I could have gotten this info before I went through $1300 bucks for what should have been about $300-$400. They do not need to remove trans for a valve body replacement. At the very least, it is a fairly affordable try before selling it. I love mine and have had very little to no trouble, yet!
I agree, that fluid should be replaced every 30k - 50k miles. If you let it get older, it starts to break down and that in turn can damage the transmission. Sluggish shifting is a sight the fluid is probably bad, and could also indicate problems with low fluid, leaking valve body, etc. Frequent maintenance helps ensure these things don't happen. Low fluid and overheating will kill a tranny.
Yeah, I had my fluids changed at 36K and 73K and still had the problem. I don't use the 4x4 very often and I don't pull a trailer but maybe three times a summer with a 4x8 trailer. I had read some other posts, they all complained about the problem but no one had any ideas until now. Nice to see people are quick with an idea here. Thanks. Forgot to mention the rear wiper. I had/have problems too. I just turn it on and pull up on the wiper down close to the pivot on the body, seems to get it going every time.
I dont do any towing or use the 4x4. I do know that 4x4 does work. What I dont know is that how the truck was used before I bought it but as for me I just drive it as a everyday driver. I'm at a toss up in terms of keeping it or get rid of it due to all the problems that are coming up now.
