What kind of snake is this? Everytime I look for pictures of snakes, a lot of them start to look alike. It was about 12 inches long.

Looks like ye olde garter snake. At least that's what we called 'em as we played with them as kids. Find him in the grass or near a watery area?

Sorry guys, that is the harmless king snake. I remove several of these from the basement around this time every year. Last one was about 4ft.

It was in mom's garage. I pulled out the Bissell carpet cleaner and it came with it. I guess it was in the hose. Mom stepped over top of it and it snapped at her foot. I relocated him/her to a wooded area about two miles from her house.

I thought it might have been a corn snake.

Looks a little too dark to be a corn snake, but may have been; otherwise I go with gopher/bull snake depending where in the country you are. Here we call them gopher snakes...I believe the gopher and corn snake are of the same family but not genus...ABSOLUTLY not a king or garter snake.

Yeah... the pic made him look kinda skinny...but upon closer observation, he looks like he's got some girth to him. Garters are wimpy little buggers and aren't as well marked. Sorry..my bad.

But... garters are much funner to pack around and play with. Of course, my fourth grade class didn't think so, when somebody knocked the jar off the ledge and he went cruisin'. I think that was one of those educational days I got praised and then lectured. hehehe.

I stand corrected. The give away is the dark line from the eye to the jaw hinge. I didnt see this last night. Maybe too much turkey. Look at the kingsnake photo below and see the difference. Kings have a wide stripe that is where I confused the two.

Pit vipers have vertical slit pupils. That snake has round pupils, which means it's not a copperhead.
