burning smell when towing

i have noticed recently a burning smell in my truck when towing (10-15k lbs). never noticed it before, truck has about 18000 miles on it. it also blows good amounts of black smoke even when not towing. just curious to see if anybody has had any problems similar to mine and what needed to be done to correct this. thanks

Do you have an 08? According to your signature you have a 2002...? And now that I reread it... I see that you have 18,000 miles on it. Sorry about that! Most likely an 08 haha.

Black smoke most likely means a cracked DPF. That could be causing the smell but there's no telling.

Black smoke out of an 08 means your DPF is trashed. To make sure it isn't something else, check the end of the tail pipe for soot, if there is soot, bring it to the dealer and have them replace the DPF, and make sure they clean the tail pipe so you will know if it happens again!
