just got home from trying to pull my buddy out of the mud and noticed while i was giving it hell and jerking on his truck i smelled a burning smell. smelled like a burning clutch but i wasnt using the clutch enough to burn it, thought maybe tires at first but it was more of a clutch or brake smell. could it have been the belts? they did get wet and squealed a little when i crossed the slough, water went over my hood, but they quit squealing before i got to his truck. the burning smell stayed around the whole time i was trying to get him out but once i started heading back out it went away.
truck is a 76 f100, 360 v8, granny 4 speed, dana 21, think front may be a dana 44, and rear is a ford 9. truck has 36" Q buckshots
on the way home everything was perfect as normal, just wandering what that smell couldve been
My guess would be clutch. If the clutch is about ready to go, it will start to slip whether you've got your foot on the clutch pedal or not, especially in a situation where you're doing a hard pull.

Well the clutch is only 2-3 years old and i dont drive the truck a whole lot but it did smell like a burning clutch
If I suspect a clutch, and tried to diagnose it by the seat of my pants, This is what I do:
Start the truck in a high gear, like if your already rolling use 4th gear, and rev the engine up and let out the clutch. If it doesn't hook up right away you've got a worn clutch or some other problem. It should hook up and lug the engine.
Don't forget, as a clutch wears, the pressure plate starts to push back on the throwout bearing. It could be that the clutch is fine, but the pedal needs to be adjusted again.
Does the pedal have ANY free play in it before it pushes back and the clutch starts to slip?
Im pointing at the clutch as well.. Krewat is correct, my clutch would not fully engage due to a throw out bearing issue. I adjusted it until I could get in there and change it out(in my case)
