Can anyone tell me if I have to change engine frame mount to put power steering on a non power steering 1969 truck with the FE MOTOR? I was told the motor frame mounts are different and won't work with power steering gear.Any and all information needed.I have a 78 model steering column and gear I will be using THANKS
To do it correctly you should use the left motor perch off the donor truck that has a Saginaw (Ford) box then use the two forward mounting holes on X member. Some have said a Saginaw will fit with a Bendix PS or manual boxed truck but you will have to butcher up the perch to make it fit. Totally wrong in my book just get the proper perch. You do know the steering column is shorter on a Saginaw box vs manual steering or Bendix PS truck?
You also need the pitman arm, there are 2 different drops for the Saginaw box use the correct one.
I have a power steering column and box from a 78 truck I just didn't know the perches were different.I guess I will try and find a left side power steering perch. THANKS
It's a nasty dirty job removing one from a wrecking yard or your local Pick-N-Pull, been there done that with the 68 with a Bendix box. I used a axle as a pry bar to jack up the motor in the wrecking yard, no jacks allowed in.
Plenty of tools, hand cleaner and paper towels. Maybe over the top I collected two spare Saginaw boxes. Heck I have a spare driveline, rear diff and a couple C6 boxes.
If I came up with a complete bendix set up pump pulleys gear box pitman arm and all would this work with non p/s engine perch and the 1978 auto p/s column that Ialready bought? and will there be any clearance probleems with my headers on the FE 360
That column will be short for the bendix box. If all you need is a PS perch for the saginaw setup youd be better off.
PM me. I may have a extra perch...

You will have more clearance with a Saginaw box than that Bendix POS box.
That box has a $250 core value, they leak, twitchy at speed and expensive to rebuild, no bad problems with a common Saginaw box. See the picture here?
Get the left perch and Saginaw PS box off a truck with it plus the firewall mounting bracket as it is different than the mounting bracket off the manual steering truck or Bendix power steering truck.
You can use the old round can Thompson pump with your Saginaw box just get the Saginaw truck high pressure hose.
A remote cooler added to the return line will help the seals and oil.
When this deep into a project it would be best to rebuild the pump and steering box preventing a seal leak later in bad weather, seals know when it rains ha, ha.
This is also a good time to set the proper preload of the steering box with nothing attached to the pitman arm and out of the truck.
Do you have the proper crank pulley for adding PS plus the mounting bracket with spacers for the bracket? I prefer the old style cast iron pump mounting bracket. Many Fords (95%) have the PS pulley out of alignment of the crank pulley, check and correct with different different thickness washer between the mounting bracket and the pump, you have 3 locations to adjust with.

Been there done that on the 68 CS with 69K original miles, I was stupid and thick headed wanting to make a leaking Bendix box work as it was not a worn out POS, like new inside just 35 year old seals. At $450 in old seal kits plus still twitchy at speed (I go over 120 mph at times) I switched over to a Saginaw box. What a difference so Mr. Bendix is now garage wall art with a spare seal kit around it's neck and pitman arm.
Buy a Ford parts department rag joint not a el cheapo made in China POS unit.
Check your steering column bearings they are cheap tin can units easy to replace. When your all done knowing the front cab mounts are good and not rusted out adjust the firewall mount to prevent any side force on the lower column bearing and steering box input bearing.
When all done you'll drive around and enjoy the truck until the gauge
shows "E" again.
You must of found that steering system in a 68 or early 69 truck as it "Bendix box" was not used in any other Ford vehicle, again wonder why? A quick easy swap for the pre 67 truck member wanting a bolt in power steering unit.
Think about this, Land Rover has the same Bendix box but added a high pressure external line to both sides of the rack piston for again another leaking British product. I know and LMAO as I own a 95 Discovery with this same bad design POS steering box that has leaked on the input shaft. See a pattern here?
All said and done, have a safe holiday.
