Fuel transfer pump...Help!!

1989 F250 7.3.. truck died Monday...fuel problem of course...knew it was the transfer pump..bought new one at NAPA..only 34.00...love the prices on parts for these trucks...Anyway, took the old one off a little while ago and I think I am in big trouble...the pump lever or arm?? has broken off and is nowhere to be found by sticking my fingers in the hole as far as possible...Can you believe it...a simple job turned ''out of hand''..maybe??...177,000 miles, probably the original pump...thought about replacing it six months ago to be on the safe side BUT!!..Wish I would have!!...Anyway, not being a gearhead, but not afraid to turn a wrench...I don't know what to do???....Someone help...PLEASE!!!....THANKS A BUNCH .....sometimes it hurts to like an old truck!!!..But, man alive these are good trucks!!!

Maybe try and stick a flexible magnet in there and see if you can pull the arm out. I have a shop magnet that I bought at Harbor Freight that looks like a screw driver but it has a long flexible end on it. If you can find the arm you need to check to make sure you have all of it. You don't want any little pieces left in the motor. If that doesn't work its off with the oil pan.

Off with the oil pan....that's what I thought would be the answer...have you ever heard of anything like this before?...30 minute job turning into ''who knows how long"....thanks, I'll try the magnet first ,of course...there is a harbor freight in my neighborhood across the river in Ceredo, West 'by god' Virginia...

I personally have never heard or seen that happening but anything is possible. Could be a weak spot in the arm or something severely locked up in the lift pump. If it were me, I would drop the pan and make sure that all of the pieces are out. If you do get it out with a magnet you need to hold the arm up to the rest of the pump and make sure that there are no small chunks that aren't accounted for. I replaced my pump with an electric pump and made a block off plate to cover the hole in the block. Works much better that the OEM pump does.

I'm not sure, but I think the motor has to come at least partially out before the pan comes off, but I'm not sure.

Well, took the magnet suggestion and lo and behold brought the lever out and the spring but can't locate the pivot for the lever, one would have thought it might have still been in the lever...Think I will talk to my local mechanic and see about him doing the oil pan...no garage here, and south point ohio is getting quite chilly for this ol honey laying on the ground...supposed to rain all week.....thanks for all the help!!
