how many horses does the 4.9 straight 6 push out stock and would the 4.9 be considered the 289 or what i wanna know what the numbers for the 4.9 are thanks.
thanks i appriciate it im just curious cause im looking at a new truck cause the one i just bought went to the off-road trails in the sky so gotta find a new one.
The 6 is a good towing motor (more so than the 5.0) and the lower end torque would probably be nice for off-road use.
It might also get an extra mpg versus the 5 liter and 2 or 3 over the 351...but if you're looking for an engine to wind out all the way, the big 6 isn't the one.
Towing/rock crawling or something - 6 is the way to go.
yea im not looking for a record in the 1/4 mile with the truck just somthing to tow a boat everynow and then and a little off roading cause i cant get enough of it and the gas mileage is another thing so i think im better off with the staight 6 then the 351.
The straight six IMO doesn't have the horsepower for many off road conditions. The 351 is the better engine as it has the low end torque of the straight six and the horsepower to boot (210hp/310tq). But the straight six is a great/durable motor, everyone will tell ya that.

Yea you cant kill a 300. It has plenty of power for what your wanting to do. It will pull a good size boat, they do great offroading (from all my experiences with mine offroading) ect... The parts to fix them are also pretty cheap, so if you break it, you can afford to fix it. Just keep oil in it, and change it, and itll last for you...

I've wheel'd with all three and IMO the 351 is the best, the 300 is a great second, and the 302 can take a hike...great engine just not in a truck.
When your in a situation where you've got a lot of load/resistance in the tires (sticky mud, deep snow, etc) and the engine loads up, sometimes you need that extra bit of horsepower to get momentum and movement. The 300 just doesn't have good enough power to get the wheels goin' in certain situations. The 351 has 60 horsepower and 50 ft-lbs of torque on it...theres a big difference hidden there.
On the other hand, the 300 has enough power to muscle its way through most common situations.

Look at it that way then the 460 and the diesel motor are king and the 300, 302 and 351 can take a hike.
Well eco, the 460 has decent power and the pre powerstrokes were ok also, but there was also a concern for gas mileage. Myself i dont care for the 460, its HEAVY and stock there not that impressive on the numbers (HP and TRQ), and same goes for the IDI 7.3's and the 6.9's IMO..

Exactly, the 460 is a pig and it's heavy. Not to mention you can't have an F-150 with one unless you put it in. The older diesels aren't that good, I certainly don't want one.
Granted, I like the 460 but it's not very powerful in stock trim, it gets horrible gas mileage, it's heavy, and you can't easily modify it to make more power.
It's actually cheaper/easier for me to stroke my 351 to 393 or even 427 and blow the doors off a 460 than it is to swap one in and try to make power out of it.
The 460 has it's place and its a great motor but it won't be under my truck's hood.
I pull a hallmark tool trailer and a 30' travel trailer with my 460, does a great job of it. Gets as good and better gas mileage as my 351 gets.
I get about 13 with the 351 and about 14 with the 460, empty or loaded.
The 351 pulls the trailers well to but it is so much easier for the 460 to do it. Can feel the load on the 351 pulling the hallmark, weighs about 3000lbs. With the 460 can't tell its there.
The camper is near 7000lbs, sure I'd pull it with the 351 if I didn't have the 460 but I'm sure glad I don't have to.
Having had several of each (18 in all ) go for the 300. I run 302s . I like the 4 MPG more I get than any 351 I owned and it pulls my car trailer. But the 300 is a low end lover would be good for what you want.Plus MPG
I go out west every year al351's never saw above 13 MPG with 235' and 3:55 rears .And its flat out there. But if you have trailer with some weight to it hooked weekly get a 351.
