well i just bought a 78 f150 with a freshly rebuilt 300 6 andi wanted some more hp
I'd say that motor has pretty low compression like all the motor from that era, so swapping on a later head would be a good start. The next thing would be upgrade the cam, and install a good exhaust system. It's 300 cubic inches so there's no reason it can't produce similar HP numbers as the V8 if you let it breath. I have seen a few stupid fast I6 drag cars at the track.. well over 300hp.

yeah i agree with the 300 as a good choice.
it will tow pretty much anything you can hook to it
[from experience] you keep the oil in it and changed as said
it will outlast your truck
i love mine but it just doesnt have the get up and go the V8 has but
its a damn good engine
You could start with a late model EFI head, it'll have smaller combustion chambers for sure, and possibly port it and add some larger valves. I'm not big into the I6 but I bet there are aftermarket heads available, compare the cost of all the porting and valve work and you may be further ahead with the aftermarket piece. A cam like the one you linked would be a good upgrade, but of course you want a 6 cylinder version not the V8 cam.
