Free Engine Mods?
I've been doing some reading around and have found a few free ( or really close to) ie advancing timing, EGR blockoff, ect
I read something about a TPS mod, does this apply to the 4.9L or was it just for the 5.0L?
And are there any downsides to adding a EGR block off plate?

I did the EGR block off about 3 weeks ago. No problems so far and I think it does run better (not greatly better). But in my opinion, circulating exhaust gas from a motor with 190,000 miles on it through the plenum can't be good (maybe that's why there's so much black goo in it). Supposedly, the EGR blockoff may make some motors run hotter (it defintely has not on mine). I assume some motors don't want nice pure air and need the exhaust gas to create less combustion (like maybe a high compression/performance motor).

The purpose of an EGR system is to lower combustion temps which lowers NOx emissions. It only opens at part throttle, so any power increase you feel would have to be either at part throttle or you're tricking yourself. Unless, of course, the valve was stuck open in which case it would lower power and you would be correct in thinking you had more power. If there is a heavy buildup of sludge in your intake, you may want to remove it and clean it out. That should give more of a boost in power for free/cheap (gasket(s) and some cleaner).
