Sniper Rifles
If you have a 700, you can pick up a enhanced battlefield stock set up for it. they also make one for the m14, i think fulton armory makes them. if you want to go big you can pick up a grizzly 50 cal for under 1500.00 or if price isnt that big of a prob you can pick up the semi auto version of the barret light 50 for about 6500.00
personally the weapon i like the best is the m14. you can find them super cheap and throw on a good adjustable stock and you have a great weapon that is good for center mass shots clear out to 1200 meters and more. it would either be that or a AR-10 in 308 and sport the hell out of it.

there are a couple of different scopes I like and they really depend on the shooter. the scope I used the most was a leupold CQB variable

all of the other missions for overwatch i used the big vari x

or the springfield armory rangefinder reticle, not sure they make it any more though

this thing is awsome.
The first sporting rifle sold to the public in .30-06 was the Winchester Model 1895 lever action. The .30-06 caliber was introducd on this model in 1908.

I, for one, think that the term 'sniper rifle' is used too often in the wrong context, just as 'assault rifle' is used incorrectly, or should I say, inappropriately.
Other than the 5 round magazines that Springfield Armory, Inc. (not to be confused with the ORIGINAL "Springfield Armory") ships, or the 20 round 'standard' USGI magazines that are available from SAI, or CMI (CheckMate Industries) who supplies the magazines for the government, there are some 'cheap' 30 round magazines for the M14/M1A platform that I cannot recommend using.
Also, there are some Taiwanese imports of 'dubious' quality that abound.
What other
Lastly, (quoting now)
The last time I looked (last weekend) the cheapest M1A that I saw was running $1,895.95. That was for a Scout/Squad.
I did see a PolyTech (Chinese made) M14S for $895.00. . . . well used.
And finding these are like finding hen's teeth. They are now rare.
(Those persons that have them, know what they have and what they are capable of with a little tweaking and don't want to get rid of them!)
As for my knowledge of the M1A, I own one that has been accurized about as much as one can be. It started life as a 'standard' SAI M1A, and is (now)comparable to an M21.
It will put 5 shots into a group UNDER 1" at 200 yds, all day long, with handloads, or Federal Gold Medal Match 168 gr. loads.
The rifle has cost a total of almost $4,000.00 to build.

(Target is a one-inch circle, inside of a one-inch square.)
As for what I'd recommend for someone that is looking to do some "Long Range Shooting". . . .
Remington 700 PSS or Remington 700 'Varmint' rifle in .308.
The Remington 700 in .30-'06 or .300 Win Magnum is also a great long range rifle.
If you want an 'older style' rifle, the Mauser K98k is a decent (and fairly inexpensive) rifle that can be shot at long distances and be accurate.
A friend has several K98k variants, and has an Iron Elite scope mount that he can move from rifle to rifle, and one of these old beauties shoots groups under MOA at 600 yds!!!

you don't need some expensive gun for long shots, what you need is practice, a gun is not going to make you shoot better. one of the best feelings in the world is going out and shooting some clays with a cheap mossberg 500 and then seeing someone with a benali not be able to hit anything.
for semiauto feel, i like the fal, cheap, efficent, weighs less than an m1a . it has a 20 round mag but "rumored" to be able to adapt a 30 round mag off of another european standard gun to fit on, the details escape me right now.
but i found for the best practice is just a simple .22. i don't have one but a friend of mine does and the gun is great, cheap to use and really hones in your shooting skills, especially if you are a beginner. we used things like tabsco bottles out of mre's for our shots and playing cards.
You wimps with your M14s!.....Geez!.....

Just kidding, but one of my friends has an m14, and it seems to be a really good rifle.
